Analgesic - relieves pain

Anticatarrhal – acting to dissolve and eliminate the formation of mucus

Anticoagulant – prevent or remove blood clots

Anti-depressant – helps to remove or alleviate depression

Anti-emetic – prevents vomiting

Anti-inflammatory – reduces inflammation or swelling

Anti-leukemic – the treatment of leukaemia

Antimicrobial - kills micro-organisms

Anti-mutagenic - cellular protector

Antineoplastic – acting to inhibit or prevent cancer

Antioxidant - a substance that inhibits oxidation

Antipruritic – relieves itching

Antiseptic – prevents the growth of disease causing micro-organisms

Anti-ulcerous prevents or helps remove ulcers

Antiviral – for the treatment of viral infections

Anty-dysenteric – to relieve or prevent dysentery

Anxiolytic – for the reduction of anxiety

Aromatic – having a pleasant and distinctive smell

Carminative – relieves flatulence

Cholagogue – discharges bile from the system, purges

Choleretic – increases the volume of secretion of bile from the liver

Contraceptive – aims to prevent pregnancy

Detoxifier – removes toxic properties

Diaphoretic – inducing perspiration

Diuretic – increases the excretion of water

Dysmenorrhoea – painful menstruation, usually involving abdominal cramps

Gastro – the stomach

Hyper-cholesterolemic – high cholesterol in the blood

Hypertension – high blood pressure

Hypotension – low blood pressure

Hypo-cholesterolemic - low cholesterol in the blood
